NSW Energy Savings Scheme

Energy Saving Scheme - NSW Government Incentive

Are you currently running a gas or electric hot water system? The NSW government has launched an energy savings scheme to help improve energy sustainability, providing incentives to households and businesses to upgrade to more energy-efficient appliances.

What is the NSW Government’s Energy Savings Scheme?

The Energy Savings Scheme is NSW’s largest energy efficiency program. The Scheme provides households and businesses with financial incentives to improve the energy efficiency of their equipment and appliances, including solar hot water systems and heat pump water heaters. This is done through the creation of Energy Savings Certificates (ESC)1. Combining the new ESC financial incentive with the existing Australian Government Small-Scale Technology Certificates (STC)* will help you reduce the upfront purchase price of an energy-efficient solar or heat pump water heater from Solahart Sydney.

How does this benefit you?

• Save hundreds off a new solar hot water system or heat pump water heater.
• Reduce your ongoing hot water energy consumption by up to 65%.2
• Protect yourself from future energy price rises by becoming less reliant on the grid to heat your water.
• A more reliable electricity network.

How does this benefit the NSW Government?

• Helping make energy in your home or business more affordable
• Reduced energy consumption in NSW
• A more reliable electricity network.

To find out if you qualify for this incentive and how much the Energy Saving Scheme can help you save, fill in the form below:

Generous incentives for Solar Hot Water and Heat Pumps

Generous incentives for Solar Hot Water Systems available via the NSW Government's energy savings scheme
Generous incentives for Heat Pump Hot Water Systems available via the NSW Government's energy savings scheme

Terms and conditions:
* The Australian Government Renewable Energy Target scheme provides a mechanism that offers a generous incentive to help you make the switch to solar water heaters. The incentive comes in the form of Small-Scale Technology Certificates (STCs) that can be traded and sold on the open market or can be used as an upfront discount to reduce the purchase price of your new system. The number of certificates that can be created per system is based on its geographical location (zone) and varies with the type, size and model of the system installed. The value of an STC is not fixed and varies depending on market factors. Currently, each certificate is worth $36.

1 Like STCs, ESCs have a variable market value and are subject to change. Their value can also be used to offer a discount on the purchase of a solar or heat pump water heater. Currently, each certificate is worth $26. The ESCs are only available in NSW.

What is not covered under this program:

• The replacement of an electric water heater with a solar (gas boosted) water heater, as the NSW ESS does not incentivise new gas connections.
• Installations of new solar water heaters or heat pump water heaters in new buildings or where there is no existing electric or gas hot water system.
• The replacement of an existing solar water heater or heat pump water heater.
• Any installation undertaken to comply with any mandatory legal requirement imposed through a statutory or regulatory instrument of any jurisdiction, including, but not limited to, compliance with BCA and BASIX-affected development requirements, except for alterations, enlargements or extensions of a BASIX-affected development and a water heater is being replaced.

2 Energy savings of up to 65% shown are based on Australian Government-approved TRNSYS simulation modelling of a Solahart 302L and using a medium load in Zone 3 and apply when replacing an electric water heater. Any savings will vary depending upon your location, type of Solahart system installed, orientation and inclination of the solar collectors, type of water heater being replaced, hot water consumption and fuel tariff. Maximum financial savings off your hot water bill are achievable when replacing an electric water heater on a continuous tariff.

Small-scale Technology Certificates (STCs)

Solar water heaters, heat pumps and solar power systems are great for the environment, and the Australian Government Renewable Energy Target scheme provides a mechanism that offers generous incentives to help you make the switch. The incentives come in the form of Small-Scale Technology Certificates (STCs) that can be traded and sold on the open market or can be used as an upfront rebate to reduce the purchase price of your new system which could save you thousands of dollars.

STCs are available in every state of Australia. However, the number of certificates that can be created per system is based on its geographical location (zone) and varies with the type, size and model of the system installed^. The value of an STC is not fixed and varies depending on market factors.

^For a Solahart Solar Hot Water system, each STC represents 1 megawatt-hour (MWh) of electricity displaced over a 10 year period. For a Solahart Solar Power system, each STC represents 1 megawatt-hour (MWh) of renewable electricity produced over a maximum deeming period. The number of STC’s created varies with the size and model of the solar water heater or PV system and the region (or zone) in which the unit is installed. The value of an STC is not fixed and varies depending on market factors.

Feed-in Tariffs

To provide a further financial incentive to switch to solar power, some state governments and electricity providers offer preferential feed-in tariffs. These tariffs allow you to sell any excess electricity you generate back to your electricity provider.

NSW Government New Battery Incentives

The NSW Government announced new battery incentives will be available from 1 November 2024, with the incentive amounts and requirements changing from 1 July 2025, in line with the introduction of the federal government’s Cheaper Home Batteries Program.

The NSW Government battery incentive from 1 July 2025 onward is an incentive for connecting your solar battery to a Virtual Power Plant (VPP).

From 1 July 2025, the incentive amounts you can receive are: up to $550 for a 10 kWh battery or up to $1,500 for a 27 kWh battery. Eligible participants can receive these incentives on the upfront installation cost of a household battery for homes and businesses with existing solar systems.

Cheaper Home Batteries Program

The federal rebate for home batteries is here.

Available from July 2025, the Cheaper Home Batteries Program offers eligible Australian households and small businesses up to 30% off the cost of installing small-scale solar battery systems, helping store renewable energy and reduce electricity bills.

Eligible Australians can access a federal rebate of up to $3,720 on a 10kWh battery system, making it more affordable than ever to store your solar energy and reduce your power bills.

This is great news for homeowners and small businesses looking to maximise their solar investment, with eligible households able to access up to $372 per kilowatt-hour (kWh) of usable battery capacity (before administration fees and charges) – potentially saving thousands on upfront costs.

How to Benefit from the Cheaper Home Batteries Program

The program is intended to benefit households and businesses.

Step 1: Register your interest with Solahart now.

Step 2: Solahart can assess your battery needs and provide a quote for a new solar battery system.

Step 3: Have your battery installed in accordance with program guidelines.

If you don’t already have solar power installed, we can still help you. Get in touch with Solahart now and we’ll arrange a solar power assessment and installation.
